The knowledge test, also called the written test, is a 40 question, multiple choice test that covers the fundamentals of driving. Walk-in testing for the written test is available on Saturdays from 12-3 pm ($30 per attempt--we won't start tests any later than 2:30 pm on Saturdays) or during the week by appointment ($50 per attempt).
The Washington State Driver Guide covers all of the material that is in the test. The Driver Guide is available for download from the Department of Licensing website, or a hard copy is available if you visit any of the DOL's offices. In order to take the written test, you must bring in some form of ID (birth certificate & SS card or Washington State ID/Permit are both valid forms of ID for the test), and you must also bring your PIN/Confirmation ID #. This number is on Washington State IDs, Permits, and Licenses; if you don't have any of these, you can obtain your PIN/Confirmation ID # by preapplying online at the DOL's website.
Practice Test - Please note this practice test is to help you understand what the test format will be and is not a good study guide to help you prepare for the test.
The best way to prepare yourself for the test is to read the DOL Driver Guide.
